I looked out at the garden this morning to see a little chipmunk hurriedly digging and cramming his face with squash and cucumber seeds. Just look at those cheeks! He turned and froze as soon as I opened the window to take this picture and ran off after a minute. But every time I look out, there he is helping himself, before I shoo him away. I just planted everything two days ago, and I haven't seen a chipmunk since we've lived in this house until now. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I should be doing to keep pests away? I have a feeling that what I planted two days ago is going to be severely depleted by this afternoon.

My mom used to put some coffee grounds around the garden. And obviously coffee grounds are also a nice fertilizer. :) When you actually have plants, you can spray the plants with a mixture of soap oil and cayenne pepper -- no harm to the plants. :-)
You could also try some toy snakes (but no guarantees that Jack won't steal them first)
Hope that kind of helps! Good luck with your garden!

Thanks, Belinda. I'll have to try one or more of those suggestions :) Fake snakes sounds like a good one. My dad used to put a fake owl in our garden.
I love the idea of fake snakes!
