not yet ready

In an attempt to get this kid out of diapers sometime in the near future, we decided to offer Jack a reward of Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things that Go if he can go shoo shoo on the potty, a step of readiness he hasn't displayed yet. I didn't anticipate his insistence of sitting on the potty for 80 minutes this morning, right after I told him (he LOVES this book). He finally peed, and I was proud of him for that, but he was very upset when I told him we would try again later for the book. I suspect he would have sat there for hours until he had his promised book in hand if I let him. I think diapers are going to last longer than I'd hoped.

A side-note: our kids both get diaper rashes when we use the cloths all the time, even when I try to check them frequently, so we have to alternate between disposables and cloth. Is this normal? We use Kushies all-in-ones, but they are no longer useful without a vinyl cover. I'd like to try something else. Any suggestions?

i think perhaps it's time for a new diapering system. all-in-ones can be very non-breathable, and as you've discovered, the waterproofing only lasts so long under normal wash/dry conditions.

for breathability, i like anything natural against the skin (cotton, hemp, bamboo) with a wool cover. it sounds fussy, to wash wool when it gets poopy, but if you contain the stuff with a good fitted diaper, you can get away with only washing your covers every few weeks, or when they get stinky. i knit covers (which i'm sure you'd be great at!) or sew them from old sweaters. let me know if you want to know more about this option, as i could go on...

other than that, trying something like cotton prefolds (cheap and readily available) + a pul/waterproof cover. motherease airflow covers have side vents that allow things to breathe, which i like. but no leaks, either.

Caleb has very sensitive skin, but he does fine in fuzzi bunz diapers, and they are by far my favorite cloth diaper- I'd feel confident in them lasting through at least 4 kids.(They're fleece lined pocket diapers and I stuff them with a prefold). I think Bum Genius diapers probably do the best job of wicking wetness away from the skin, but the velcro seems to wear out fast, but maybe they have fixed that by now. Also, I don't know what detergent you use, but both my kids got diaper rash with cloth diapers unless I washed ALL our laundry with dye/perfume free detergent.

Thanks for your great suggestions. I did some extensive cloth diapers research today during nap time, and I feel like I've had wool nappies pulled over my eyes all this time! I found a place in Pittsburgh where you can get free consultations and actually see and feel all of the different options. I have been realizing that our AIOs are less than ideal, but I haven't really done the research on anything else- they were just the first thing I was introduced to, and I never questioned them :) I have some prefolds, but I never even tried them as anything but burp cloths. They look so simple.

On my web escapades this afternoon, I also discovered more ideal ways of cleaning them, which has always been a source of frustration. And I never even thought about detergent being a problem. I'll have to try that on our next ones.

Serina, I would love to hear more about knit and sewn covers. I found some patterns for knit covers/shoakers? that look wonderful. Definitely something I'd like to try.

Wow. I'm so glad that I'm reading about all of this now, and that you've had time to go through trial and error with your diapers so I can look forward to plenty of pearls of diaper wisdom from you in a few months! I already bookmarked the Pittsburgh Cloth Diapers site!
