homemade dough play

Jack has been asking to make our own play dough from scratch for a few days now, and we finally got around to making a batch after his quiet time this afternoon. We used "Recipe 1" on this site, which called for stove-top preparation. Jack helped me stir, until it became too thick in consistency. Just watching the transformation was a lot of fun. But most thrilling was watching the kids make baked goods with the stuff... they were smiling from ear to ear, asking me to sample their cakes, pies, and cookies, which were actually still warm from making the dough. I was a little concerned about Abigail's sour mood when she awoke from her nap, but this perked her right up, and I think I owe her outstanding attitude and behavior for the duration of the day to this dough.

We stored it in an airtight container, and assuming it doesn't get totally grubby due to handling in the meantime (though I did make them wash their hands prior to play), it should last up to three months. We may experiment at a later date with natural dyes, but today, they were perfectly content with the typical dough hue.

I love the cute mini baking tools. Are those from IKEA?

Yep, these are from Ikea. I'd been looking for a wooden rolling pin, and this set was perfect, with adorable mini bundt and pie pans, cookie cutters, and a cookie sheet.

Thanks for reading my mind. Nino and I were making our Crown of Thorns today with recycled playdough (kind of 60's-esque all-colors combo) and I said, "you know, you can make this stuff from scratch."
Now we can. yeah!
