my knight in dark brown canvas

From 07/09/2011 (by Eye-Fi)

Good thing I had the foresight months ago to know that my dragon-enthused boy would one day be a knight. And that he'd need a formidable get-up to face the mythical creatures. One with its own felt dragon, peeps! (this, Jack claims is a dragon skin, which he shows to the dragons to scare them. Brilliant.) This was intended for his birthday, but we agreed he was already getting plenty of dope gifts from family, so we saved it for a raining-fire day. The other day, he was itching to play dragon and asked if I'd be the beast- he the knight. Why, I have just the thing! You'd better believe I coaxed a good nap out of him first with the promise of a dragon-y surprise).

He insisted on wearing it to our playdate yesterday morning and then to meet my friends at the park after naps. At our playdate, the host's son, Dean, took Jack up to his room, which was a dream-come-true for Jack-- having an eight-year-old pay him so much attention AND the heap of cool big boy toys. Including a Playmobile castle with a RED DRAGON. We've been hearing about that one since we left.

He is a valorous knight, no? (He slayed me.)

the good old (and new) days

Once in a while, my three apartment-mates from college (and bridesmaids) and I are reunited for merry recollecting of college years and sharing of current goings-on. The once in a while is usually (always) when Jen makes her way back to U.S. soil from Qatar, where she lives with her husband and new sweetie-pie, Jaxon. You'd think the three of us who reside in Pittsburgh could make something happen sans Jennifer, but we usually fail.

Nevertheless, yesterday was one of those happy occasions where all four of us found ourselves together again-- at Mt. Lebanon Park-- seeing as Jen was back in the States for a visit. Lisa's due date for her second is tomorrow, so we lucked out on having her there, along with her sweet and mild-mannered two-year-old, Ethan.

He'd taken it off by the time we took any pictures, but Jack started out wearing his knight costume, after which he was a dragon, tearing around the playground, snarling and flashing everyone his terrifying dragon face. It was mildly endearing. At first.

Abigail, loving all things baby, secured her spot right beside Jaxon and beamed when she got to cradle him in her lap. Iris would have liked free reign to walk over all of the park grounds, but I kept fetching her and bringing her back to square one. It was surreal to look around and see all these little spawn, who seem to have multiplied in such a short time- they have. We kept thinking, "Where did they come from?" (We know.)

Mike *thank you love* picked our brood up after he got off work and put the three early-to-bedders down so I could join the girls for a peaceful and newsy dinner at Panera.

I only hope our next coming together will be before Juliet's wedding next summer! I was blessed with a great group of friends.

There and back again

Our trip to the Midwest deviated a bit from what we had in mind for the week. The turn being that Mike got pretty sick starting on Tuesday morning with what in hindsight seems to be the flu significantly worsened by his diabetes (it's a lot harder to keep one's blood sugar in check when sick). We decided to extend our trip by a day to give him more time to recover, but he's still not there. That whole ordeal really put a damper on the week, especially for Mike. I was at least glad to have help from Tom and Sharon while he was laid up for a few days.

Of course we still made the most of our time in the Badger State. We didn't site any Buckies, but we spied plenty of deer, watched a bunny brunching out the back window and were chased inside when a bat emerged from the umbrella that was being un-cranked on the back deck and kept swooping back toward us. We would have spent more time outdoors, but the weather, as in most parts around the country apparently, was unseasonably hot and humid. We reached a heat index in the 110's some days, and my gosh, it felt that. You'd open the door and be hit with the steaming, oppressive air, which immediately fogged glasses and camera lenses. Some mornings before temps turned unbearable, the kids joined Grandma in her flower garden and around the nice, spacious yard, ripe for exploring.

We were mostly held hostage indoors, though, taking advantage of the overhauling AC (another plus that we were at a house with central air during this heat-wave!). And the slew of vintage games stashed from the Ryan boys' childhoods: Cootie, Bed Bugs and Crackers in My Bed being the kids' favorites. And Jenga, more for building than playing.

This little imp has been especially funny/devious this trip. She's getting more animated and interested in joining in on the shenanigans of her brother and sister. And talking A LOT. She was also up between 5:15 and 6 every morning, I think-- never adjusted to the time-difference, I suppose.

Plugging her ears at the dinner table, which was, to her credit, a pretty rowdy place.

With the exception of Mike being sick, we all really enjoyed our time at Grandma and Grandpa's house-- and in Iowa last weekend for the Ryan Family Reunion (maybe I'll put up some pictures of that and our time spent in the hotel pool once I can find the pictures from Mike's mom's camera-- I failed to take many), where we also visited with Uncle Willie and his girlfriend, Ashley, whom we met for the first time. The kids were especially taken with her. Good thing they're coming to Pittsburgh next month!

Our trip back yesterday went better than we could have hoped. And now we're infested with ants- hundreds of them), an unfortunate discovery I made when I got a mouth full of them. Shiver. Other than that and my completely overgrown and wilting garden, thanks to the dry heat, I think I can safely say, we're all glad to be back home and to a somewhat normal routine again.

Buzz

(I started this post a while ago and what do you know? I got distracted before it was published...)

From 07/09/2011 (by Eye-Fi)
Jack's had good luck in the past at our church's annual garage sale during the Fun Flair, and this year, he found this little Buzz Lightyear action figure for $0.25. I just thought he was so cute-- how enamored he was with the toy. He kept asking if he really got to keep it forever (and not return it like we used to toys at the Toy Lending Library) and said that he was going to give it to his son when he has kids. Why can't they always be so sweet?

the status of things

I'm still alive and well... though a bit tired from "hush in a hotel" three nights in a row. We've been in Iowa splashing around in the hotel pool and cavorting with family at the Ryan Family Reunion and are now back in Wisconsin, relaxing and visiting with Mike's parents for a few days. Iris' obstinate tooth has finally been bared to the world, after about nine days of working its way through, causing diaper issues of epic proportions all the while. The kids, though tremendously lacking sleep, are otherwise doing well.

And now back to my my blogging break.

$2

From 07/08/2011 (by Eye-Fi)

From Ressurection's Fun Flair this evening (missing is the super-find-- a chapter book, which are now Jack's favorite, about a T-Rex.

Plus $0.25 for a Buzz Lightyear toy (All Abigail wanted was the Beauty and the Beast book, which was a part of the two bags of books for $2.00).

Considering the amount of reading that goes on here and these kids' love of books... not bad at all. And some great finds, to boot.

No monsters here.

It's been more than ten eventful months since Jack's first nightmare. After switching up the function of several rooms and having Jack be a drifter, he's finally back in his original digs again. Freshly painted with a crisp, pale french gray. The monster repellent paint, though a little more expensive, was worth the cost on all accounts. And the new-to-us dinosaur quilt, which Jack picked out from eBay, did its part to lure him home.

I need to re-position some of the wall-hangings and make a shade for that lamp, but here's a start.

Jack appreciates that the dragon (a stipple I did in fifth grade) covers the place where he first saw the Bunnicula shadow on his wall-- It "protects" him, so he says.

And he approves of the easy-access to all the books. He does love the books.

Fourth weekend

We started the holiday weekend off with some trail running/biking. Mike and I took turns with the kids while the other ran a couple of miles. I ended up carting Gail's bike (and Gail) back on the double jogger, as the ride back was a bit tiring for her (plus she was down in spirits after taking a spill and subsequently being run over by her brother).

On Sunday, we attended a Fourth of July party at our friends, the Emery's, with a bunch of other families and friends.

The kids enjoyed the plethora of kids' activities.

This one even joined us for a while, as we were watching her for the day. She preferred to wander off to the edges of the yard, though, before we'd direct her back to the crowd.

From 07/03/2011 (by Eye-Fi)

We had hopes of heading to the Science Center while Mike and I were both around so that we could take Jack to see Hubble on the Omnimax Screen. But we failed to take into account the Regatta traffic headed to the Northside as well, and it took us nearly 40 minutes to travel the better part of a mile. At least we had a nice view while we were inching along.

From 07/03/2011 (by Eye-Fi)
Jack and I ended up going to see a humorous, Seussical-style narration animal documentary instead-- Animolopolis-- while Mike and the girls played in the little kids' exhibit.

The kids were all out before the roar of fireworks around the city began. I went up and tried to wake Jack, as the South Hills displays from his third-floor window were awesome. But he couldn't be budged. Maybe next year, he'll see some of their glory.

Our long weekend is still going strong- Mike has off again today. Apparently now seemed a good time to whip out the Playmobile nativity set, with which the kids are now happily playing. Christmas in July? We'll cap off our festivities with our own cook-out this evening.

I hope everyone had fun celebrating the birth of our country. Happy Independence Day!
