I adore this boy's creativity. I gave him and Penny the containers from two Panera salads we'd had one day to play with in the bathtub. Upon getting out, Penny held hers up to her face to look through, and as soon as she did, I could see his little gears turning.
Seeing the clear plastic orb over her face will remind him of an astronaut. The "astronaut" will make him think of a rocket ship. "Do we have any big boxes?" He'll want to make one.
It being Friday morning before the kids' Enrichment activities, I tell him we can get started on it, but we won't be able to finish. So he gathers all of the supplies ask him to get. When we got home in the afternoon, we get right back to work measuring, cutting, and taping. Others will occasionally jump in to help. The big blank sides make him think of drawing paper. Being the artist he is, he'll ask for some colored pencils, to see a picture of Mars on my phone. That's where this ship is going.More helpers will come to "help."
He'll want Dad to move it to the basement. On the way down, he'll spy the stampers we played with earlier in the week and have to take a stamping break.. He'll want to add some stamping embellishments to his rocket. Hooray! It's [not] finished! He and Penny will watch Wall-E, their heads resting on the rocket, backlit by the basement bar light. Goodnight, Moon. Goodnight stars.
Saturday morning! Zeke goes down to see his rocket and notices how bare the inside of his rocket is compared to the outside. He'll have to add a control panel and ask Mom to make some levers to attach to the inside of the ship. Alas, we've used up all of the packing tape, so Mom will have to search high and low for more tape. She'll find some duct tape on Dad's workbench and proceed to get distracted cleaning the mudroom counter, doing a load of laundry, starting a pot of coffee, going through the mail, paying some bills, finishing getting the pot of coffee started, wiping down the pantry counter, pausing the newly started laundry to throw in the dirty rag, getting Penny up, on the potty, and dressed, helping Opal with an IEW paper, feeding Kitty, who is whining (Is she lying? No one knows.), and taking her morning supplements before she hears Zeke screaming for her in the basement. He'll have completed a rather involved control panel and she'll help him add some pull levers. Seeing the finished rocket will make everyone happy about the communal effort put in to build it. And make us want to check out books about spaceships from the library. (Another photo my phone made using a cool watercolor filter)
And Mom will yawn, reminding her how tired she is. And chances are, if she feels tired and it's still before noon, she's going to go get a cup of coffee.
(Don't mind my inconsistent pronouns and tenses. I'm not going back to make them match 😛)

Jack {waterfalls, Mr. Pelly, and a film festival speech}
Our first born has been absent in this virtual space for a while, but that doesn't mean he's not present in our lives, still making us laugh and making us proud from afar. I thought I should give an update on his goings on at JPCatholic in sunny, southern Cal. It's good for my mama heart to hear his enthusiasm every time I ask how things are going. He's getting involved and taking advantage of some incredible opportunities, making wonderful friends and connections, putting God first in his life- it's easy to do at a university that plans classes around daily Mass.
Recently, his Frassati Hiking Club took a trip to see some waterfalls. Fr. Dominic, the school's resident priest, led them and wrapped up their hiking expedition with Mass followed by lunch overlooking one of the waterfalls. That had to have been incredible.
You'll have to trust me in that he is in both of these photos. He's kind of hiding.
From an update Jack sent last month: "There haven't been many events this quarter, but there were a couple this past weekend. On Saturday, I participated in a double-elimination Smash Bro's tournament. I'm not very good compared to the people here, and I got eliminated right away, but I still managed to win one match in a best of three. Yesterday, however, I participated in another competition called "Mr. Pelly," a male-only contest featuring a foot-race, talent show, and random-questions to put you on the spot. I actually managed to win it (for my talent, I did a Shakespearean monologue). The reward is to deliver an address during the school film festival later this quarter."
Mike and I were looking at the video and realized that everyone seemed to be sporting unconventional footwear in the footrace, so I asked Jack. His response... Such a goof. I love him. Well, then I asked him what Shakespearean monologue he recited for his talent. I had assumed it was one that he'd learned for one of the Shakespeare plays he was in in high school. No.
"I did Lance's monologue from Two Gentlemen of Verona where he takes off his shoes and talks to them using those slippers." Now I do not, sadly, have a video of said monologue.
Alas-- I had to look it up-- I can very much see Jack in this young man's place with Lightning McQueen and Mater slippers. He would have nailed it. The reward for winning the Mr. Pelly contest was to deliver a speech at the Student film festival a couple of weekends ago.
We love you, Jack Ryan. Fifteen days til we see you again. But who's counting?

Happy Epiphany!
Jack had his friends, affectionately called The Brochachos, over for a sleepover. Such a courteous, delightful, and hilarious group of teenage boys... (Abigail won this round of The Catholic Card Game- so funny!- and I got second)Never too old to build awesome cushion forts! Here, Thomas has a master bedroom-slash-kitchen-slash-office (you cannot see, but he's putting in some time on Zeke's V-Tech laptop X-D)The official Christmas season ends on Epiphany- or the Baptism of the Lord, which is tomorrow, and these cards are about to come down... the rest of the decoartions will follow in in the coming days (firstly, our tree, which is rapidly losing its needles)Opening the annual Epiphany ornaments. I always have fun choosing something applicable to each of the kids. This one and her almost-daily breakfast... they couldn't believe I actually found an avocado toast ornament :-DThe rose window of the Chartres Cathedral outside of Paris, where Jack actually visited this past springThis boy has been really into robots this year.My frappe loving girlMy butter loving girl!

Talent show skits
Our homeschool group hosted a talent show a few weeks ago. There were quite a few skits- some put together by the kids' Drama teacher, and some organized by individual students. Here were a few that Jack and Iris participated in (I missed recording the one Iris was in with one of her friends- they were funny, and I'm impressed with the kids for getting up in front of people and acting! That certainly didn't appeal to me when I was younger!)
Pre-show practicing
Sorry, this one is difficult to hear.
I stopped recording before the slap was sent back across, but you can imagine it X-D
And sorry- for some reason this one is silent until close to the 30 second mark. Worth watching til the end though!

Thanksgiving with Mimi & PopPop
Mimi and PopPop came a couple of weeks ago to visit. The first night they were here, Mike and I attended a dinner with Bishop Hying, so Mimi and PopPop held down the fort with the kids and had a blast playing with some foam that Mimi had bought to make cushions for the window seats in our sunroom. We took advantage of our free Children's Museum membership one of the days and went there with PopPop while Mimi stayed home and worked on the cushions- the kids' new favorite spots to read and curl up by the fire :) And we enjoyed an early Thanksgiving dinner with them. As always, our time together was such a blessing!
