three months

From January 28, 2013
Opal! How in the world are you growing so fast?! We can't keep up with you.

Though I'm glad we made it to this point. The first three months of having a new baby really take their toll. It seems that around three months, they start getting on more of a schedule (we're working on that) and sleeping longer stretches (We're still waiting, Opal. Any day now.). She continues to stink at nursing. But man, the girl can put it away fast. Even though she sleeps on her stomach, we've started initiating some tummy time, and she can hardly get her head off of the floor. Her little peers who are younger than she is are rolling. I'm happy with the limited mobility, though, for as long as it'll hold off.

She continues to be such a doll baby, smiling and "singing" and sometimes even laughing. And I love having all of the extra helpers this time around. When I'm making lunch or moving the laundry, and she starts to get fussy, all I have to say is, "Can someone keep Opes happy for a minute?" and there are approximately three little people who run to her aid. Number Four-- she's a keeper. We adore you, Honey Bug!

a room for Opal

It's a sad day here. I packed up the co-sleeper and set it aside for the next baby in line to use it. We moved the others out of our bedroom around the same time- close to three months- and it's always hard at first, but I get to the point where I just can't take waking up to those little grunts and sleep noises every hour, lovable as they are.

I love her sweet little baby room, though. It makes me happy just to be in there, sitting on the twin bed nursing her (I've always preferred that to a chair or rocker). I realized I never shared any pictures of it, so I went in and snapped some shots of it today.

I like the green and blue chain links that E and the kids added in there before she left. They made them for each of the kids' rooms.

From January 25, 2013
The two pictures over the twin bed are a Wisconsin map (Mike's homestate) and Matryoshka dolls (her Uncle Roma is from Russia- plus I just liked the painting and thought it would go well in the room), and I fully intend to one day add a Maryland reference. The other wall-hanging is a "Now I lay me down to sleep..." prayer that hung in my room as a child.

The marvelous driftwood and crocheted owl mobile was a gift from Aunt Heather to Iris before she was born. And the drawings/paintings over the side of the crib are copies of Joan Walsh Anglund prints I did myself. J.W.A. always reminded me of my mom, who did some replicas of hers when she was younger.

I did in fact order pictures today (with a 101 free prints code from Shutterfly) to fill that empty frame (a Pottery Barn Kids $5 Craig's List find).

The the little wall book shelf is a great space-saver. I painted it ivory (it used to be blue). And I love even the wet bag with its blue and green birds.

And here is the quilt I made for her in all of my pent-up time during her pregnancy. It's made with Hello Luscious by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics.

The big girls are excited to share their sweet girlie bedroom (except for when Iris steals her clothes... it's starting already). Here's a secret... the "valance" that's in there is actually just a folded piece of fabric that I once hoped to actually sew into a real valance, but then I thought, why?? It's doing the trick there just fine (other than being able to see through it some), and I can use that fabric for something else one day if we move and have different-sized windows to cover.

for PopPop

I always think of my dad whenever we get a decent amount of snow. He knew (and still knows) how to enjoy a good snowfall. My camera didn't catch the actual beauty of this- it was sunny but still snowing and everything was just sparkling. I know it's not as pretty as it would be with fields and countryside all around, but it's still pretty. We'll take it. These were taken yesterday afternoon, and we got a couple of more inches last night and today.

A visit from E!

It's been almost a week since the fact, but I'm just now getting around to retrieving the pictures from Mike's phone...

The kids were ecstatic last week when E surprised them at their swim lessons. She'd returned to Pittsburgh (from Wisconsin) for the week to visit some friends. It's funny because the kids knew she was returning at some point for a visit, and Jack said on Saturday morning before their lessons, "Wouldn't it be cool if E gave us swim lessons?" Coincidentally, she used to life guard and teach kids how to swim. I agreed that would be pretty amazing. Little did they know, she'd be waiting for us at the Mt. Lebanon pool later that morning! Jack had his typical hand-in-front-of-his-face I'm too excited to talk or make eye contact reaction. I wish I'd had a picture of that.

But we had fun just hanging out for a while and going out to Red Robin (where Opal SCREAMED just about the entire time because she was so worked up from being up too long and wouldn't nurse) with her after lessons. We only wish she didn't have to go back!

Mike took like 20 pictures (we were bound to get some good ones, right?)...

first laugh

Tonight, I laid Opal on the kitchen table for a little while while we finished dinner. I came up close to her face all of the sudden, and she cackled. It was such a strange sound coming from her, as none of us had ever heard her laugh. I tried to catch it, but I thought of grabbing the camera too late and only caught a snippet of the contagious giggle before the memory filled up on my camera (and I was recording while watching her, so my picture is off). Though now that they've started, I'm sure there will be many more. So, so sweet. I really can't get enough of this little girl.

A friend brought some toys and books they were getting rid of to Activity Day this morning, and I was excited to see a Spirograph set. We used to play with these as kids, and I thought Abigail in particular would enjoy making these pretty designs.

I was right. After spending a long time teaching her how to do it, she was so pleased with herself and told me something mothers love to hear but rarely do: "Thank you, Mom! You're a good teacher." That made my day.

Jack loved them, too.

The same friend who was getting rid of the books was so thoughtful to give Jack a bag of wooden castle blocks and a hat that was perfect for my imaginative boy. He was thrilled that it had a real(!) feather. (nevermind that he's wearing it backward)

Jack gets to stay up a little later than the girls, and these are the things he asks to do with his extra time. Science experiments. I'm glad he has such an enthusiasm for learning.

From January 21, 2013
This particular activity was "sinkers or floaters?" He thought to jot down his hypothesis in his "field notebook" and was surprised by his findings that size isn't a determining factor in whether something sinks or stays afloat.

Trinity snowmen

Since we have yet to be able to make a real snowman yet this winter (the last snow wasn't a good consistency, and we woke up to a little snow this morning, but the amount was entirely unimpressive), we made some out of cotton balls instead. I actually prefer this variety, as it didn't require all of the suiting up and cold, wet noses and wrists that go into making the real deal. The kids had fun though, and it seemed to satisfy Jack's ever-growing *need* to make crafts ("I guess I'm just a person who's a craft-maker," so he says).
